Virtual game robbers!
August 30th, 2005
I man has been arrested for robbing virtual characters in the game Lineage II.
Thats simply so wrong but God almighty it is also really really cool :D
A man has been arrested in Japan on suspicion carrying out a virtual mugging spree by using software “bots” to beat up and rob characters in the online computer game Lineage II. The stolen virtual possessions were then exchanged for real cash.
The Chinese exchange student was arrested by police in Kagawa prefecture, southern Japan, the Mainichi Daily News reports.
Several players had their characters beaten and robbed of valuable virtual objects, which could have included the Earring of Wisdom or the Shield of Nightmare. The items were then fenced through a Japanese auction website, according to NCsoft, which makes Lineage II. The assailant was a character controlled by a software bot, rather than a human player, making it unbeatable.

Hamster phone recharger
August 30th, 2005
Well the heading and this picture says it all. The 16 yrs old g33k hooked up his hamster whell to a mobile phone charger.

“Elvis does the legwork while Peter charges his phone in an economically and environmentally friendly way.
He came up with the idea after his sister Sarah complained that Elvis was keeping her awake at night by playing for hours on his exercise wheel.”

Douglas Engelbart is a genius!
June 30th, 2005
I have earlier read the article on the “AUGMENTING HUMAN INTELLECT: A Conceptual Framework” The thought of using computers to free man from the more trival tasks in life is indeed very compelling.

The notion that the ability to manipulate information is essential in the evolution of mans intellect I think is spot on. I recently read a very concise article about Doglas Engelbart on wikipedia – and would like to give it must read status.
Its essential for anybody interested in why computers with graphical user interfaces even exist ( and what the general idea of computing is). He is the real deal: philosophy, technology and good vibes in one big bundle.
Did I mention he also invented: the notion of hypertext and the mouse as a pointing device – ohh and then he did the “The Mother of All Demos.”…
Go here for the full article: wikipedia.org – you won’t be sorry.

Downloading ain’t stealing :D
June 30th, 2005
The BBC has an article on the effect of anti pirate campaigns:
“Two UK university researchers found that people did not see downloading copyrighted material as theft.”
From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4122624.stm
I must say I think the core of the problem is that the music and movie industry (and the campaign mentioned by the BBC) all assumes that consumers would: THEY DON’T. The truth is that most people just don’t care, and thats the core of the problem.
The research apparently did not elaborate on WHY people really don’t care about “copyrighted material”.

All Your Base are belong to us!
June 22nd, 2005

I really love this story :-)
It’s about the fabric of the Internet and what happens when real nerds communicate globally in a meaningful way.
The sentence “All your base are belong to us” came from the old game Zero Wing, released on the Sega Genesis/Megadrive.
The poor translation became a cult phenomenon.
The dialog from the old video game goes like this:
In A.D. 2101
War was beginning.
Captain: What happen ?
Mechanic: Somebody set up us the bomb
Operator: We get signal
Captain: What !
Operator: Main screen turn on
Captain: It’s You !!
Cats: How are you gentlemen !!
Cats: All your base are belong to us
Cats: You are on the way to destruction
Captain: What you say !!
Cats: You have no chance to survive make your time
Cats: HA HA HA HA ….
I personally like the sentence “Somebody set up us the bomb” :-)
