Aging/expiring web pages

November 15th, 2006

Clever idea, never hear of it until I got a cool link in the mail:

The idea is simple yet powerfull – the aging sings that applies to real paper can be applied to web pages as well. In this case they are using a paradigm alá: the more traffic a page has had, the more worn it will look. That way you can see how used (not old) information is (or at least how old the page its posted on is).

The idea is originating from Bell Labs Multimedia Communication Research Department (press release):

Live Web Stationery is a demonstration of Web pages that “age” based on the amount of traffic that they endure. Peloton is a computer-based simulator that creates virtual environments for bicycle rides.

Doree Seligmann, producer of the Metaphorium Web site (www.multimedia.bell-labs.com/metaphorium) on which Live Web Stationery will initially be installed, has collaborated with fellow researcher Stephan Bugaj and artist Cati Laporte on developing algorithms that automatically “age” Web pages due to the stresses of human handling, much like the aging process for real paper.
